TEDxAsheville 2010: The Wrap-Up

In 2009 a small, but dedicated group of volunteers, fueled by their commitment to ideas worth spreading, created an event to showcase local thinkers who are changing the world. With little to work with other than their energy, passion, and determination, this team packed out The Orange Peel, with hundreds more turned away at the door.

TEDxAsheville was on the map. But is it possible to capture lighting in a bottle twice?

On August 29, locals and visitors filled The Orange Peel in a sold-out show to hear talks from a CNN Hero, a man who has lived in the woods since he was 16.

The speakers challenged the audience to embrace possibilities, reject limitations, unleash creativity, and live the life of purpose that each of us knows is waiting.

Unlike 2009, this year’s conference was a ticketed event. 2010′s $25 admission fee, charged solely to cover costs of the event, in no way dampened the enthusiasm of local idea-philes, who sold out the event days in advance, proving that in Asheville, big ideas can compete with cool indie bands for mindspace.

TEDxAsheville 2010 Webstream

Let’s face it, nothing can really take the place of actually being at TEDxAsheville 2010. So many of the qualities that make TEDxAsheville a unique event really have to be experienced first hand.

But Asheville can be a “last-minute” kind of town, and some of you, for whatever reason, will keep putting off getting your ticket… until it’s too late. (in fact, by the time you read this, it might already be too late). But we get it—hey, sometimes, we’re that guy. We wouldn’t leave you hanging. So we are partnering with a couple of local businesses to offer you the next best thing–webstream viewing of the conference.

TEDxAsheville 2010 will feature two official offsite viewing locations: Posana Cafe (downtown) and The Doubletree Biltmore Hotel on Hendersonville Road. Seating is limited in both locations—please contact them directly for more info.  There is no charge for either of the webstream events.

Posana Cafe: 1 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801, (828) 505-3969

Doubletree Biltmore Hotel: 115 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803, (828) 274-1800

Both locations will stream the four-and-a-half hour conference live, from approximately 5 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Please note that the webstream may not begin exactly at five, and that there are two half-hour breaks in conference content.

If that doesn’t grab you, hold a viewing party in your home. We will be streaming the conference off of our website, as well at the Citizen-Times and Mountains Express sites.

Putting the “T” In Technology…

For those who may have missed TED Terminology 101, the “T” in TED stands for Technology. From its beginning, the event showcased new technologies and the organization was an early adopter of web technological innovations on their ted.com site.

Technology, especially in the form of social media, has been hugely instrumental in the creation, implementation, and ongoing evolution of TEDxAsheville. So it was only natural that as the TEDxAsheville team brainstormed ideas to enhance the audience experience, new technologies would be at the top of the list. We think you’ll agree that the below apps will make an already awesome event even better.

Droid App

Developer extraordinaire Peter Ma of TEDx Transmedia has created an Android program app for TEDxAsheville 2010. Go to Android Market and search for TEDxAsheville to download for free. The app will include a schedule of all presenters and topics, as well as other useful information.

ScanLife

Technology sponsor MMS Direct is providing a special service to TEDxAsheville attendees this year: encoded registration badges readable with a smart phone barcode scanner app, for exchanging information and networking at the conference.  The barcodes will load information directly into your phone’s contact list.

“TEDxAsheville is as much a community of ideas as it is an event,” said Executive Director Jennifer Saylor.  “Because ScanLife allows attendees to effortless exchange contact info, we believe it has the potential to facilitate the spread of evolutionary, action-based ideas.”

You can download ScanLife for free at at 2dscan.com. Only advanced purchase tickets will have the scannable bar codes.

Computer & Cell Phone Recycling At TEDxAsheville 2010

On the classical TV show The Muppets, Kermit the Frog often wearily expressed “it’s not easy being green.” While we can’t really help Kermit, we are making it easy(ier) for you to be green.

Got an old computer or cell phone you need to unload? Bring it to TEDxAsheville on August 29th–we are partnering with Charlotte Street Computers to offer on-site computer and cell phone recycling. Donate your used PC and get entered into a drawing for a new iPod. Charlotte Street Computers will refurbish the machines and donate them to low-income youth in need of a computer. That’s all-around win!

Besides taking up space and wasting copper and other resources that could be recycled, computers and other tech trash pose an additional problem–toxicity. More than 700 chemicals are used to manufacture computers including cadmium, chromium, mercury and other heavy metals. But the biggest problem is the lead in cathode ray tubes found in most monitors.

When the tubes are pulverized, the lead–between 2.5 and 8 pounds of it per monitor–can seep through the landfill and into groundwater.

TEDxNextGenerationAsheville gets press at the Citizen-Times

TEDxAsheville’s (little) sister, TEDxNextGenerationAsheville is doing an excellent job and commanding serious press in the process. Let’s cheer on our bright youth. TEDxNextGeneratonAsheville will premier at The Orange Peel on Saturday, August 28.

Ideas conference TEDx aims to inspire Asheville’s next generation

An upcoming ideas conference here in Asheville will put the spotlight on young people, their passions and action that may come of that caring.

It’s called TEDx Next Generation Asheville, and it will be 3-7 p.m. Aug. 28 at The Orange Peel. The event will feature a group of 11 speakers, who will talk about everything from preventing bullying to spurring social justice through music.

“The push of this event is to give our young people a platform to share their ideas,” says Ashley Cooper, creative executive director of the nonprofit organization. “Our hope is to invite the public to see how much these young people have to contribute in terms of their insight, wisdom and creativity.”

The theme of the event will center on how to turn all that youthful passion into action. Cooper says people who come should be prepared to get engaged. There will be audience discussion sessions and interactive booths to keep the discussion going, she says, and there will be an emphasis on having fun.

“This isn’t teens getting up and acting like adults,” Cooper says. “These kids want to integrate fun into what they’re doing.”

Cooper is a former school counselor turned activist and community organizer who has her own life and family coaching business. She sees the event as an invigorating new model for education.

“The way that TED marries passionate people with people who can build on those ideas is a great formula for learning,” says Cooper, who would like to see a TEDx youth day held at every school in Buncombe County.

TEDx Next Generation Asheville will be held the day before the adult version of the local conference, TEDx Asheville, which was held for the first time last year. Both conferences are a locally organized version of the popular California-based conference held each year known simply as TED, which stands for technology, entertainment and design.

TEDx Next Generation is a free event, but you have to have a ticket to get in, and the organization wants people to register so they can stay connected. To get a ticket, send an e-mail to tickets@tedxnga.com.

What’s different about TEDxAsheville in 2010?

By Jennifer Saylor

Remember this at TEDxAsheville 2009?

Expansion to conference-style event: The year we’ve grown to a 4.5-hour conference event with two extended 30-minute breaks built in (time and space to discuss the event with others, meet event organizers and presenters, and meet people in the community with an interest in TED and spreading ideas)

Building sustainability with buy-in: Our 2009 event was about seeing if Asheville could successfully pull off its own TEDx conference. When you showed us we could, we changed our focus in 2010 to the long term: to creating an annual event. And that means buy-in from our participants. It’s not sustainable to run a major city event with 30 volunteers planning for 10 months and not ask our audience to become TEDxAsheville stakeholders themselves.

(Just FYI, did you know that filming and editing three hours of conference footage into 10 or more videos is an $8K-$15K expense? Add renting the Orange Peel for performance and rehearsals, the cost of ads and posters citywide, and you realize why the TED conference recommends a budget of $50K for a TEDx conference. We do it with a lot less, but we can’t do it alone.)

So we’re charging $25 admission this year and seeing how it goes. Participants aren’t just paying for a ticket, you are creating a new local forum for ideas: a community built around great ideas in Asheville, one that brings global attention to local people and local ideas.

Buy a ticket. In return, we’re working to create engagement, involvement and community that lasts long beyond our event.

Better Technology:  This year we introduced our Droid App at TEDxAsheville on the Droid Market.  It also includes the TEDxNextGenerationAsheville schedule and lineup as well.  We have scannable badges this year!  Networking made easy for your benefit.  We have a hands-on product demo sure to make you reconsider what you can do with your brain.

FREE live webstream events: select venues around town allow people to tune in for free to a live TEDxAsheville webstreamviewing event, and the conference will stream live on the TEDxAsheville website, via internet radio audiocast on Asheville FM, and other online outlets TBA. Check our website (TEDxAsheville.com) for news as plans develop.

Online registration and ticketing: 2010 attendees register online (download our Android app!) and create a TEDxAsheville profile to become part of a connected online community built around great ideas in Asheville. An opt-in TEDxAsheville newsletter will tell members about TED-related local events including TED conference watching events, and allow the growing TEDxAsheville community to have more input shaping future TEDxAsheville events.

The TEDxAsheville fellows program: A “TEDx fellows” team searches for a small number of up-and-coming local presentation talent to attend this year’s conference for free, and be mentored by the TEDxAVL organizing team. This team cultivates talent for future events, keeping a crop of local presenters ready to take the stage at future events.

On-site computer & cell phone recycling with Charlotte Street Computers: We’re keepin’ it green by offering attendees to recycle electronics with us and a local, independently owned business. Got an old junker PC to unload, and get a chance to win an iPod in a raffle for recyclers.

After-conference mixer to meet presenters, organizers and fellow attendees: Want to meet our presenters, talk to organizers about putting on a major conference, nominate a 2011 presenter, volunteer for future TEDx events? Stick around the Orange Peel after the conference to do all off the above and process the night’s great ideas with other people interested in great performances and great ideas.

A sister event for youth, TEDxNextGenerationAsheville: TEDxNGA takes place place August 28, also at the Peel, and spotlights the ideas and talents of young people. Check them out at TEDxNextGenerationAsheville.com

The My Idea Project:  Spearheaded by Ashley Cooper, Executive Director of TEDxNextGenerationAsheville, this project will be sure to please.  Come to TEDxAsheville with your idea worth spreading!
