12 Baskets Cafe: bearing witness to the truth of abundance | Dr. Shannon Spencer

Our society has and is being spoon-fed a myth that there are not enough resources for everyone which leads to seeing one another as competition for accessing what we need. This scarcity narrative breeds and justifies fear.

The truth is that there is enough - an abundance even - we merely get to think outside the status quo systems that currently exist to create alternative social spaces where resources are distributed more equitably.

Rev. Dr. Shannon Spencer is an ordained UCC pastor that founded Asheville Poverty Initiative and 12 Baskets Cafe. She is a chaplain at Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women and the Adjunct Pastor for Missional Engagement at First Presbyterian in downtown Asheville. She just finished her Doctorate and is looking forward to watching a movie without feeling like she needs to be reading something. But most importantly, she is mom to two beautiful and amazing girls!
